Villa America
I have only 2 chapters left and I've been trying to read it slowly to make it last. What a beautiful book. I've gotten so sucked into this story I can't bear to finish it.Recently jumped on the Murphy 'literary bandwagon'; after reading Paula McLain's "The Paris Wife", (which was as excellently written as this). This novel takes you on a long emotional journey from the childhood's of both Murphy's in New York, to the warm beaches of Cap de Antibes and their slice of heaven, "Villa America". You meet their friends, Leger, Hemingway, the Fitzgerald's, Picasso, MacLeish and others, and feel like you're at one of their fabulous soiree's, drinking champagne and eating caviar with them. I can't express in words how wonderful the writing is in this novel, how complex and interesting the characters, how beautiful and immersive the way Klaussman describes the scenery...if I could, I would be writing novels too!) She captures the spirit and sturdiness of Sara, the rather tortured soul of Gerald, the utter chaos of the Fitzgerald's, the almost overbearing masculinity of Hemingway...always getting us into their minds and feelings, all the while describing the South of France in a way that makes you ache to be there. This isn't just a novel of rich people drinking and partying...make no mistake. The Murphy's went through periods of hell that no one should have to face. I for one am glad they had their years of happiness before their world fell apart. I ABSOLUTELY recommend this novel; for anyone interested in "The Lost Generation", life for artists in the 20's, or the Murphy's in particular. What a lovely, stunning novel. I will definitely be ordering her other novel and keep following her!
