Salute to the Romanian Jews in America and Canada, 1850-2010VLADIMIR F. WERTSMAN
Canada and the USA cover quite an extensive ground. So does Wertsman's book on Jews from Romania who had the good fortune to land in this part of the world. The historical background of Jews in Romanian territories (from the first century to the mid-1800s) might come as a (welcome) surprise to those unfamiliar with this exceptional history, and it goes to Wertsman's credit for having supplied it. Consequently, all the more surprising the anti-Semitism that arose after 1877. He presents hundreds of examples of Jews who expressed their gratitude for freedom by giving back to the countries that adopted them. Some names are known--the Nobel laureates, the athletes, the scientists, the artists--and some names will come as a delightful surprise. Noteworthy is Wertsman's painstaking and thorough research. As an author myself (Jewish--Does It Make a Difference?), I know how much energy and scruple go into producing such a book as Wertsman's. For Canadians and Americans interested in positive contributions to their respective societies, Wertsman's book provides an excellent record.
