Roland Warren was a leading sociologist theorizing about the nature of the American community in the 1960s and 1970s. This book is the third edition of his classic, The Community in America, which appeared in 1960. I came to this edition after reading Ken Wilkinson's boom The Community in Rural America. Rural sociology is a tiny field but I knew that Wilkinson was a giant in the field who died young. Wilkinson, however, clearly thought Warren was the master and most of the key ideas in Wilkinson's own classic book were derived, he said, from this 3rd edition of Warren.
