This is an excellent survey of melancholy in Protestant history. The chapter on the elder James and his mania was fascinating and that thread sort of continued all the way through to Weber‘s capitalism. I could not put this book down. I read Varieties of Religious Experiences shortly thereafter and wished I had read it before, it is like the case studies of this book.
