Throughout South America, the descendants of the millions of slaves brought to the New World by the Spanish and Portuguese still pay homage to the pantheon of their African ancestors, often, albeit, under the identities of Christian saints. This is equally true of the candomble sects on the east coast and the fiestas and rituals of the inhabitants of the west coast. Despite the many obvious differences between the styles presented on this record, there are also striking similarities - for example, the potency of the rhythms and the alternation of soloist and chorus, encountered equally in the music of Brazil's Atlantic coast and Colombia's Pacific seaboard.
