The Earth Band captured live in Boston 1977. Longtime fans of Manfred Mann know that he has a great ear for great songs and quite often records definitive cover versions. Of the 5 covers on this set, 2 were composed by Bob Dylan, ("Father Of Day, Father Of Night" and "The Mighty Quinn", with which Mann hit No. 1 in the 60's), 3 Bruce Springsteen covers ("Blinded By The Light", "Spirit In The Night" and "For You") and finally a Robbie Robertson / John Simon song, "Davy's On The Road Again". The rest are Earth Band originals. This live recording was one of the last to feature bass player Colin Pattenden, who departed at tours end.
Summary:I purchased the CD itself and it was definitely worth it to me. If you like 35 year old songs from Manfred Mann and can live with some audio issues, I recommend it, because at least the majority of the tracks are quite good at a low price. If one was to judiciously edit the WAV files you could wind up with shorter but even cleaner sounding songs. If only they had been recorded the live set with better equipment. Oh well, what do you expect from something that is (hard to believe) performed over 35 years ago!Details:I really liked the Set. The sound quality just is not there on about 3 of the tracks. For example Blinded by the Light has some pretty bad sections on it where it seems a mike was failing, or a cable or something. I had to try to clean it up using a WAV editor. It helped some, but ultimately this one track is probably for serious collectors. Still I would say at least 5 or 6 tracks have decent to good (for older live) sound quality.Favorite tracks: On the Road to Babylon (don't see this one live much at all and it sounds pretty good), Spirits in the Night, The Time is Right - Rocks! (both sound pretty good with few if any noticeable sound flaws). Davey's on the Road was quite good too. Liked Captain Bobby Stout (except some of the audio there is a bit flakey, else it would have been a terrific version - and check out the voice riff on that one at the very end!). The Mighty Quinn is quite good (a nice arrangement and performance), but unfortunately like at least two of the other tracks, the sound got a bit crummy in places, though the majority of that track was fine.Buy this if you like (Older) Manfred Mann live.
