I have followed "Spirit" - specifically, Randy California's music for over 48 years (hard to believe!) Since the beginning, I loved & have been in awe of the great talent, growth & versatility, in his incredible body of music. I only wish that he was given the recognition which he deserved for his musical genius, as well as his pioneering, influential & unique sound during his lifetime. As most know, who are on this particular page, at the age of 14 Randy played in a group with Jimi James (Jimi Hendrix) & learned some things from him. Due to Randy's young age, along with Jimi's quick rise to fame, most believe that Randy learned "harmony guitar" from from Jimi, yet it is rarely mentioned that Randy taught Hendrix some things as well. Of course, Randy was always a humble individual, who referred to Jimi as his "mentor," Randy was not the type of person who would even hint that he influenced Jimi, or anyone else, for that matter. At the early age of 14, Randy had already been playing for years, picking up skills from some of the wonderful Blues "greats," He continued to have a profound influence on those who had the privilege of playing music with him, as well as the "sound" of the late 60's & the following decades. Jimi Hendrix & Randy were both great musicians. There is no doubt that the two had a special bond, When Jimi referred to Randy as "California," (there were 2 members of their band w/the name "Randy,") it stuck, becoming the name that Randy used throughout his entire career. When I saw the shirt, I was compelled to purchase it as a personal way for me to pay tribute to one of the best musicians & performers whom I've been privileged to see perform & listen to for the greater part of my lifetime. We lost Jimi Hendrix along with other wonderful performers at such a young age, which was tragic to our generation. Although Randy's tragic, yet heroic death was in 1997, it still was far too early, leaving a great void in the world of great music as well as for all of those who loved him. It is my hope that there will come a time, when the music of the spirit of "Spirit," will finally be given the honor & appreciation that is so overdue. In the meantime, I sometimes wonder if Randy is living in a "Water World," or simply gone "Farther Along." Then maybe, he has "started all over again," & is happily playing with some of his old friends.
