America has a been an experience for me. I was working as an FM broadcast DJ when "Horse With No Name" came out. I quickly dubbed them the "Best Neil Young Soundalike Group"--a moniker that I've come to deeply regret. The band was so much more than that. I realized that long before the group did an outdoor summer concert that our FM station sponsored. I was standing nearby with my wife backstage while the group enjoyed their dinner. Looking up Dewey Bunnell saw me and my wife and said, "Please, sit down and join us." Classy!Of all their albums, "Homecoming" has been my favorite. I own the LP and the CD, but I've never heard this album with the clarity and presence of the Audio Fidelity SACD release. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of a surround mix that puts me in the center of the band. After all, I normally don't hear bands in this listening position. Yet Elliot Scheiner's 5.1 mix, while placing the instruments around the listener, does not offend. He avoids the temptation of music musical chairs with the players--something that I wish that more multichannel mixes followed. Furthermore, the instruments are clear and clean as are the vocals. It's hard to believe that this SACD is mastered from 1972 analog master tapes. But above the fine audio quality, we have the musicality and creativity of Dan Peek, Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley that shines in this album. Truly, "Homecoming" is America's best and, by far, Audio Fidelity's SACD is the best rendition of this magnificent album to date.
