Product Description

Product Description SAVAE's "La Noche Buena" recording takes listeners on a delightful, and often unexpected, musical journey into the colonial cathedrals of the Spanish frontier. Adventuresome 16th & 17th-century composers blended the melodies, rhythms and dialects of indigenous Aztecs, Maya, and Incas- with those of Spanish Catholic missionaries and West African laborers to create unique Christmas music for The New World. The Nativity story is told here through music that captures the lively cultural exchange of an unprecedented era when the voices of Native Americans, African Slaves, and Spanish Conquerors were raised together in celebration of the birth of Jesus. About the Artist SAVAE made its debut in 1989 at San Antonio’s historic San Fernando Cathedral, presenting Latin American Christmas music from the colonial period. In the years that have followed the group has been heard on the soundtrack of a major Hollywood release, television documentaries, national radio broadcasts, and on their own ground-breaking recordings. The ensemble has toured the United States from New York to Seattle, and from Baton Rouge to Milwaukee. The International Baroque Music Festival of Bolivia presented SAVAE in its "Misiones Chiquitos" series, marking its first foreign tour.SAVAE’s 2002 recording of ancient Middle Eastern music, Ancient Echoes, features the ensemble’s exploration of ancient music and dialects from the Holy Land, and has received rave reviews for its inspiring blend of scholarly research and creative flair. Director Ridley Scott included a track from that recording in his 2005 feature film, The Kingdom of Heaven.

This CD provides a unique opportunity to enjoy a small part of the vast cultural inheritance left to us by the people who lived in Mexico during the 300 years of Spanish rule. The carols are both beautiful and historic.
